PUNE: A group of residents from Uruli Devachi on Monday demanded rollback of the increase in property tax, stressing that they should be taxed according to the rates before the village’s merger in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits.

“The hike in tax after the merger is unjust. We want the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to roll it back. The tax should be charged at the same rate as that of the gram panchayat,” said Kapil Bhadale of Uruli Devachi Sangharsha Samiti, a citizens’ group.

Addressing a news conference on Monday, residents of the village claimed that the new tax structure after the merger was not affordable. “The PMC can increase the property tax as and when the facilities promised in the development plan are complete. But even then, the increase should not be drastic,” said a villager.
